Field trips

Oban/Backwater 15/2/15
Kerry, Mick, Eric, Kathy, Judith, John H and Rene’ met at the Big Sheep at 9 am. Travelled to Backwater and changed cars for the 4WD trip to our fossicking destination. On arrival we went upstream investigating sand banks and gravel beds till we reached a known spot where we spent most of the morning. Finds were Smokey Quartz, Jellybeans and Tourmaline. An exceptional Tourmaline specimen was found by John H, 1” long and ¼” thick. Returned to vehicles for lunch then headed downstream locating several potential new sites for further investigation. This locality lends itself to an overnight camp out, possibly for April trip. Due to thunderstorms we had to leave early to get out of our 4WD area, stopping at the owners campsite for the duration of a severe storm including hail the size of ’bonker’ marbles. Left for home when storm eased, on the way we saw how lucky we were by the debris left on the road from much larger hailstones closer to Guyra. Thx Mick
